梅原龍三郎　鉛筆デッサン　石仏【 Pencil Sketch, Stone Buddha by Ryuzaburo Umehara】[a0003]

大正・昭和の日本画壇で最高峰に君臨した画家梅原龍三郎の鉛筆デッサン。油絵に於いてはチューブから絞り出し直接描かれる手法も有名ですが、こちらもそんな豪放な筆致が感じられる作品です。

孝昌二年　白くカタキ石　とあり。南北朝時代の北魏の年号が刻まれた石仏なのでしょうか。

額は明治28年に創業し2020年惜しまれつつ閉業した銀座の八咫家(ヤタヤ)製です。

梅原龍三郎(1888-1986)

1888年　京都市の呉服業（悉皆屋）に生まれる。
1903年　画家を志し、伊藤快彦の画塾に入門。伊藤・浅井忠らに師事（同門に安井曽太郎）
1908年　のちに美術史家になる田中喜作と共に渡仏・留学。ルノワールに傾倒。
1909年　南仏のルノワールのアトリエに訪問。色彩感覚を認められ、師弟関係を築く。
1913年　帰国
1914年　二科展の創立に参加
1935年　帝国美術院会員
1944年　帝室技芸員に推挙、東京美術学校教授となる。
1952年　東京美術学校退官。文化勲章受章。第26回ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ展の国際審査員を務める。
1973年　フランス政府からコマンドール勲章を授与
1986年　逝去

This is a pencil sketch by Ryuzaburo Umehara, a painter who reigned supreme in the Japanese art world during the Taisho and Showa periods. While he is famous for his bold brushwork in oil paintings, this work also conveys a sense of his bold style.

It is inscribed with “Kosho 2nd year, white hard stone.” Could this be a stone Buddha engraved with the era name of the Northern Wei dynasty during the Nanbokucho period?

The frame was made by Yataya, a shop in Ginza that was founded in 1895 and closed in 2020.

Ryuzaburo Umehara (1888-1986)

Born in 1888 in Kyoto into a family of kimono merchants (Shikkaiya).
In 1903, he decided to become a painter and entered the art school of Ito Yasuhiko. He studied under Ito and Asai Chū (his fellow student was Yasui Sotaro).
In 1908, he traveled to France with Tanaka Kisaku, who later became an art historian, to study abroad. He was deeply influenced by Renoir.
1909: Visited Renoir's studio in southern France. Renoir recognized his sense of color and they formed a master-disciple relationship.  
1913: Returned to Japan.  
1914: Participated in the founding of the Nika Exhibition.  
1935: Became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts.  
1944: Appointed as an Imperial Household Artist and became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.
1952: Retired from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Received the Order of Culture. Served as an international judge at the 26th Venice Biennale.  
1973: Awarded the Commander of the Legion of Honor by the French government.  
1986: Passed away.
