    合わせ一間(いっけん)の仙台地方の衣裳箪笥。
    二本で一組の夫婦(メオト)箪笥ともいわれ、婚礼用の家具として作られました。二棹(さお)で約一間(180cm)幅になる造りです。
    前板は杢目の質感を触れて感じられる拭き漆仕上げ。
    金具は葉の形が矢じりに似ていることから「勝軍草」とも呼ばれる沢瀉(オモダカ)紋を施した錠前や、軍配型の引手など、非常に武家好みな意匠で構成されています。
    八重菊型のあたり鋲も印象的です。

    Ikken-sized clothing chest in Sendai region, Miyagi pref. (ikken: about 180cm)  This type of chest is also called Meoto chest, meoto meaning a married couple, this piece was ordered and made for a wedding, total width is about 180cm for a set of two.  Front boards are finished with Fuki-urushi: wiping lacquer technique so that the wood grains appear beautifully. It is full of samurai design that buke family preferred. Circled metal fittings are Omodaka plant designed, omodaka was also called “shogunso” since that omodaka leaves look like arrows. Sho: win, Gun:military,  So:plants, leaves. Handles are shaped of Gunbai: military leader’s fan and tacks are shaped of chrysanthemum.
