縦十列、横八段の計八十杯（はい）で構成された、別名「百味箪笥（ひゃくみだんす）」とも呼ばれる薬箪笥です。十四杯目の先板（さきいた）の裏には、天保七年の墨書きが今もそっと残されており、長い歴史の流れを感じさせます。抽斗（ひきだし）の裏に記された数字の割り当てを辿ると、本来は九十杯の構成であったのか、あるいはさらに下段が存在していたのかもしれない、という当時の姿へ想像が膨らみます。規則正しく並ぶ抽斗の配列と、そこに刻まれた薬用を示す文字列。

それぞれの抽斗に書かれているのは”切”や”望”、”問”、“聖”、”神”などで、よく目にする杏仁や黄耆などの生薬の名前ではない文字が並びます。東洋医学では四診という診察方法に”切・望・問・聞”があり、”聖・神・巧”は技術の高度さを表すそうです。それらを考慮すると知識と経験値を兼ね備えた医師によってオーダーメイドされたことが読み取れ、格調の高さが裏付けられます。

知的好奇心を刺激する意匠、あるいは文字そのものが宿す霊性によるものなのか、見る者を一瞬で引きつけてやまない、不可思議な魅力に満ちた逸品です。

This is a medicine chest composed of eighty drawers in total, arranged in ten columns and eight rows, also known by the alias "Hyakumidansu" (Chest of a Hundred Flavors). On the back of the fourteenth drawer, an ink inscription from the seventh year of the Tenpo era (1836) still softly remains, evoking a profound sense of the long passage of time. Tracing the numbering assigned to the backs of the drawers sparks the imagination regarding its original form—inviting one to wonder if it was initially meant to have ninety drawers, or if perhaps an additional bottom row once existed. The orderly alignment of the drawers, coupled with the inscribed characters indicating their medicinal contents, exerts a powerful hold on the viewer. Whether driven by a design that stimulates intellectual curiosity or by the spiritual presence inherent in the script itself, this is a masterpiece filled with a mysterious charm that never fails to captivate.
