パトラ（赤茶）【Patora】 [TX154]

インド・グジャラート地方の伝統的な絹織物、パトラ。経糸も緯糸も先染めし織り上げる経緯絣（ダブルイカット）です。糸を張り図面を映し、模様の色ごとに括っては染めを繰り返す。更にその細い糸を模様に狂いがない様に織ることを考えると気の遠くなる様な時間と高度な技術を要することが明らかです。

王族や貴族が富と権力の象徴として身に着けた歴史もあり、その製作過程から流通数も少なく、王侯貴族の衰退や大量生産品におされ19世紀後半には廃れてしまいます。

こちらは途絶えてしまう前のパトラ。赤い縁回りに明るめの茶色を基調とした幾何学文様の部分は日の当たる角度で黄金色にも見えて、晴れの日を一層輝かせたことを思わせます。画像では伝わりづらいのですが、ふわりと軽く柔らかで心地よい手触りです。実物をお手に取ってご覧頂きたい品物です。

切れや穴があり、画像にあるような5㎜~1.5cm程の穴が数か所と縁に切れもございますが時代物ゆえと考えおります。コレクションの一つにお勧めの一枚です。

Patora — a traditional silk textile from Gujarat, India.
This is a double ikat fabric in which both the warp and weft threads are meticulously resist‑tied and dyed before weaving. The threads are stretched, the design is mapped onto them, and each color area is repeatedly bound and dyed. Considering the precision required to weave these extremely fine threads so the motifs align without distortion, it is clear that Patola demands extraordinary time and exceptional technical mastery.
Historically, Patola was worn by royalty and nobility as a symbol of wealth and power. Because of its demanding technique, production was always limited, and with the decline of royal patronage and the rise of mass‑produced textiles, the craft fell into decline by the late 19th century.
This piece dates from before that decline. If you are able to visit our shop, we highly recommend seeing it in person. Its gentle lightness, softness, and beautifully smooth hand are difficult to convey through photographs alone.
As an antique, it does show some age‑related damage. There are several small holes measuring approximately 5 mm to 1.5 cm, as well as some tears along the edges, as shown in the photos.
